Navigating CGK Airport Arrivals: A First-Timer’s Guide to Jakarta

You land after a long flight, tired and sticky, and the next hour decides your mood for the first day in Jakarta. Which queue do you join? Do you pay the visa fee before or after immigration? Where does the customs QR code come in? Most first-timers lose time at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) because they do not know the order of steps. This guide walks you through entry rules, paperwork, and the trip into the city as they apply in 2026.

Which Entry Option Fits You

CGK sits in Tangerang, Banten, and is the main gateway to Jakarta. Your nationality and the length of your stay decide which entry route you take. The Directorate General of Immigration publishes the full, current lists at imigrasi.go.id, so check it before you book.

Visa-Free Entry (Bebas Visa Kunjungan)

Visa-free entry gives you up to 30 days. It cannot be extended and cannot be converted into another visa type. It is mainly for citizens of ASEAN member states, including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The list is not limited to these countries, and the government reviews it from time to time.

You can use it for tourism, family visits, social activities, non-employment business meetings and transit. You need a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date and a confirmed return or onward ticket out of Indonesia.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)

Most travellers from major markets use the VoA. Eligible countries include Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States, among many others.

  • Stay: up to 30 days, extendable once for another 30 days at an immigration office in Indonesia. The total is up to 60 days.
  • Fee: IDR 500,000 per person. The fee has been stable for several years and is expected to stay the same in 2026.
  • Requirements: passport valid for 6 months from entry and a confirmed return or onward ticket.

B211A Social/Cultural Visa

Choose the B211A if you want to stay longer than 60 days. It suits extended tourism, social visits, cultural exchanges, non-employment business meetings, volunteer work or pre-retirement exploration.

  • Duration: 60 days at first. You can extend it up to four times, 30 days each, for a total of up to 180 days (6 months).
  • Application: you must get it before you arrive. You usually need a sponsor, either a person or a registered company or agency in Indonesia. Apply online at molina.imigrasi.go.id or through an Indonesian Embassy or Consulate abroad.
  • Cost: the official fee is about US$100, around IDR 1,600,000 at a projected rate of 16,000 IDR/USD. Sponsors or agents charge extra service fees, often IDR 2,000,000 to IDR 4,000,000 or more.
  • Documents: passport, sponsor letter, proof of funds, return or onward ticket, and any other papers the immigration office or embassy asks for.

Other Visas

Work, study, retirement and long-term business visas exist too. You must apply for them in advance through an Indonesian Embassy or Consulate. Working under a KITAS is a separate process and not something you can arrange at the airport.

Before You Fly: ECD, e-VoA and the SATUSEHAT Question

Two digital steps save the most time. A third, the health app, is something you can skip.

Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD)

Every international arrival must complete the ECD. It is a web-based form at beacukai.go.id/ecd, and you can also reach it by scanning QR codes at the airport. Fill it out up to 2 days (48 hours) before you arrive. When you submit it, you get a QR code. Screenshot it or print it, because you scan it at the customs checkpoint.

e-VoA

If you need a VoA, apply online at molina.imigrasi.go.id before you fly. Register an account, fill out the form, upload a scan of your passport and pay by credit or debit card. The e-VoA confirmation usually reaches your email within minutes or a few hours and includes a QR code. At the airport, you skip the VoA payment counter and go straight to immigration.

SATUSEHAT Mobile

PeduliLindungi, the pandemic-era health app, has been replaced by SATUSEHAT Mobile for general health records inside Indonesia. It is generally not mandatory for international travellers entering Indonesia. Thermal scanners are still in place, but you do not need an app for entry unless a new global health crisis emerges. Check imigrasi.go.id close to your travel date in case anything changes.

Pro Tip: Save your e-VoA confirmation and your ECD QR code as screenshots before you board. That way you do not depend on airport signal or WiFi while you stand in the immigration or customs line. Also download Gojek and Grab and register before you land.

Step by Step Through CGK

Most international flights arrive at Terminal 3 (T3), which is modern and well signposted. Follow the signs for “Immigration” or “Arrivals”.

  1. Health check (situational). You walk past thermal scanners. If you show a high temperature or symptoms, you may be sent to a health desk. For most travellers, this is a passive check, not a stop.
  2. Immigration. Your lane depends on your entry type:
    • Visa-free: go straight to the immigration counters with your passport and return or onward ticket.
    • e-VoA holders: look for the designated “E-VoA” or “Pre-Approved Visa” lanes, which are often faster. Show your passport and the QR code or confirmation.
    • VoA on arrival: first find the “Visa on Arrival” counter before the main immigration hall. Pay IDR 500,000 and collect your VoA sticker or receipt. Then join the main immigration line with your passport, sticker and onward ticket.
    • B211A or other visas: show your passport with the pre-issued visa to the officer.
  3. Baggage claim. Check the electronic screens for your flight number and carousel. Porters are available. Agree on the fee first. A cart or a few bags typically costs IDR 50,000 to IDR 100,000.
  4. Customs. Scan the QR code from your ECD at the checkpoint. Officers may do random bag checks, so declare any dutiable or restricted items.
  5. Arrivals hall. You will find currency exchange counters, SIM card kiosks and information desks.

Queue times vary a lot. With several flights landing at once, expect anything from 15 minutes to over an hour. For SIM cards, Telkomsel, XL Axiata and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison all have kiosks. They are convenient, but prices can be higher than in the city. An eSIM bought before you fly, or a physical SIM from a shop near your accommodation, usually works out better. Exchange rates at the airport counters are also generally less favourable than in the city, so change only a small amount.

Getting from CGK to Central Jakarta

Airport Train (Railink KAI Bandara)

Run by Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), the train connects CGK (Terminals 1, 2 and 3) to BNI City (Sudirman) and Manggarai. From there, you can switch to the KRL Commuterline, the MRT, TransJakarta buses or a ride-hailing car. Trains run roughly every 30 minutes to an hour. The trip to BNI City takes about 45 to 55 minutes and costs around IDR 70,000. Buy tickets with a credit or debit card at the vending machines or in the KAI Access app. It is the most reliable way to avoid Jakarta’s traffic.

Gojek and Grab

Each terminal has a designated “Online Taxi” pick-up zone, so follow the signs. You can pay by linked credit or debit card or pay cash to the driver. Local e-wallets such as GoPay (Gojek) and OVO (Grab) can be topped up if you have a local bank account. Expect IDR 150,000 to IDR 250,000 to Central Jakarta. Tolls are extra, paid in cash to the driver or added to the fare in the app. Travel time ranges from 45 minutes to over 2 hours in heavy traffic.

Airport Taxis

Taxi stands are outside each terminal. Blue Bird is generally seen as the most reputable and reliable, and the cars run on a meter. You pay the metered fare plus tolls, which is similar to ride-hailing for the same distance. Express Group taxis also operate here.

DAMRI Airport Bus

DAMRI buses serve Gambir (Central Jakarta), Blok M, Lebak Bulus and other key points. The fare is roughly IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000. It is the cheapest option, but traffic can make the trip very long.

2026 Budget Reality: What Arrival Costs in IDR

These figures cover the airport-to-city leg, plus the visa fee if you need one. Prices are 2026 projections based on figures that have been stable for some time.

  • Budget: DAMRI bus at IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000, or the airport train at about IDR 70,000. Add IDR 500,000 if you need a VoA.
  • Mid-range: Gojek or Grab at IDR 150,000 to IDR 250,000, plus toll fees. Add the VoA fee if it applies.
  • Comfortable: a Blue Bird metered taxi, similar to ride-hailing, plus tolls. Add a porter at IDR 50,000 to IDR 100,000 for your bags.
  • Long stay: a B211A has an official fee of about IDR 1,600,000. Sponsor or agent fees can add IDR 2,000,000 to IDR 4,000,000 or more.

Carry some rupiah in cash for porters and small purchases. Cards are widely accepted, but card readers can fail.

What Changed Since 2024

  • Health app: PeduliLindungi has been replaced by SATUSEHAT Mobile, and it is no longer mandatory for international arrivals.
  • e-VoA: the process has been streamlined and is heavily promoted as the most efficient way to get a VoA.
  • ECD: it is fully digital and mandatory, replacing paper forms, and has been refined to be easier to use.
  • Visa-free list: it is generally stable for core countries but remains subject to periodic government review.
  • VoA fee: it has stayed at IDR 500,000.

Other Entry Points: Seaports and Bali

Indonesia also lets you enter by boat at several major seaports, with the same rules as by air (visa-free, VoA, B211A). These include Batam (Sekupang, Harbour Bay), Bintan (Bandar Bentan Telani, Sri Bintan Pura), Benoa in Bali and Tanjung Priok in Jakarta. Immigration and customs procedures are similar to those at airports.

If you fly straight to Bali, Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) follows the same entry rules as CGK. The VoA fee is the same IDR 500,000, and the e-VoA is just as useful for speeding up immigration. Taxis, Gojek, Grab and pre-booked transfers are available. There is no airport train at DPS.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

  • Passport validity. Visa-free and VoA both need 6 months of validity from your entry date. Check your passport before booking.
  • No onward ticket. A confirmed return or onward ticket out of Indonesia is required for visa-free and VoA entry.
  • Expecting to extend visa-free. It cannot be extended or converted. If you might stay longer than 30 days, choose a VoA, which you can extend once, or a B211A.
  • Joining the wrong queue. If you have no e-VoA, find the VoA counter before the main immigration hall. Do not join the immigration line first.
  • Skipping the ECD. You need the QR code at customs. Fill it out up to 48 hours before landing.
  • Relying only on a card for the VoA fee. Cards are generally accepted, but keep IDR cash as a backup.
  • Not agreeing on the porter fee. Settle it before the porter lifts your bag.
  • Planning a tight connection. Queues can run from 15 minutes to over an hour, and road traffic can stretch a trip past 2 hours. Leave plenty of time before any onward flight or hotel check-in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can I stay in Indonesia on a Visa on Arrival?

A VoA gives you up to 30 days. You can extend it once for another 30 days at an immigration office in Indonesia, so the total stay reaches 60 days. The fee is IDR 500,000 per person, and you need a passport valid for six months and an onward ticket.

Do I need the PeduliLindungi app to enter Indonesia in 2026?

No. PeduliLindungi has been replaced by SATUSEHAT Mobile, which is generally not mandatory for international travellers entering Indonesia. Thermal scanners are still in place at the airport, but you do not need an app for health screening unless a new global health crisis emerges.

What is the Electronic Customs Declaration and when should I fill it out?

The ECD is a mandatory digital form for all international arrivals, available at beacukai.go.id/ecd. You can complete it up to 48 hours before landing. You receive a QR code, which you scan at the customs checkpoint. Screenshot it so you have it without signal.

What is the cheapest way to get from CGK to central Jakarta?

The DAMRI airport bus is the most economical option at roughly IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000, but traffic can make it slow. The Railink KAI Bandara airport train costs about IDR 70,000 and takes around 45 to 55 minutes to BNI City, avoiding road jams.

Can I extend a visa-free stay in Indonesia?

No. Visa-free entry of up to 30 days cannot be extended or converted into another visa type. If you want to stay longer, you need a Visa on Arrival, which can be extended once, or a B211A visa obtained before you arrive.
