You land at Soekarno-Hatta after a long flight, and the immigration hall is full. Some people are filling out forms, others are queuing at a payment counter, and nobody seems sure which line is theirs. In 2026 most of this stress is avoidable. Indonesia now runs two online systems, one for visas and one for customs, and travellers who use them move through CGK much faster than those who wait until landing. This guide covers the whole process in order, from choosing your entry option to the moment you step outside to your ride.
Which Entry Option Fits Your Trip
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry, and you should expect to show an onward or return ticket. Beyond that, there are three main routes for short stays.
Visa-Free Entry (Bebas Visa Kunjungan)
Citizens of many ASEAN countries, including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, can enter without a visa. You get 30 days for tourism or social visits. It costs nothing, but it cannot be extended. The full official list is on the Indonesian Immigration website, www.imigrasi.go.id.
Visa on Arrival (VoA)
Citizens of more than 90 countries can use the VoA. That includes Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States. It costs IDR 500,000 per person and gives you 30 days. You can extend it once for another 30 days, so 60 days in total.
B211A Social/Cultural Visa
If 60 days is not enough, the B211A is the usual next step. It needs a local sponsor, either an individual or a company, who submits the application to the Directorate General of Immigration. The visa lasts 60 days and can be extended up to four times for 30 days each, which allows a total stay of 180 days. The official fee is typically around USD 100–150 (converted to IDR). Agents usually add a service fee of IDR 2,000,000 to IDR 4,000,000 or more for sponsorship and processing. Work is a different matter: employment requires a KITAS work permit, not a tourist visa.
What to Finish Before You Fly
Apply for the e-VoA
If you are eligible for the VoA, apply online at molina.imigrasi.go.id. It is the official portal and is the single best time-saver on this list.
- Visit molina.imigrasi.go.id.
- Select “Apply Visa” and choose “Visa on Arrival”.
- Fill in your personal details, passport information and travel itinerary.
- Upload your passport scan and a passport-style photo.
- Pay the IDR 500,000 fee with a credit or debit card.
- Receive the e-VoA by email, usually within minutes to a few hours. Print it or save it on your phone.
Because payment and initial processing are already done, you skip the payment counter and go straight to the immigration desk.
Complete the Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD)
The e-CD is mandatory for all international arrivals and has replaced the old paper forms. You can fill it in up to 2 days (48 hours) before you land at beacukai.go.id/ecd.
- Visit beacukai.go.id/ecd.
- Enter your personal details, flight number, passport information and details of accompanying family members.
- Declare any goods you are bringing in, including cash above IDR 100,000,000 or the equivalent in another currency.
- Submit the form and save the QR code that appears on screen or arrives by email.
Health App: SatuSehat Mobile
The old PeduliLindungi app is now SatuSehat Mobile, Indonesia’s national health platform. It is no longer required for international entry, and no specific health declaration is needed beyond general health screening. It is useful for health records and healthcare services once you are in the country. Check imigrasi.go.id shortly before departure in case rules change.
Walking Through Immigration at CGK
Soekarno-Hatta has three terminals. International arrivals are handled mainly at Terminal 3, and sometimes at Terminal 2. Follow the signs for “Arrivals” and “Immigration” as you leave the aircraft. The air-conditioning hits you first, a cold contrast to the thick, humid heat waiting outside, and you will walk past thermal scanners. If your temperature reads high, you may be sent for a short extra health check. It is usually quick.
In the immigration hall there are typically separate lanes for Indonesian citizens, for visa-free, e-VoA and pre-arranged visa holders, and for travellers paying the traditional VoA on arrival.
If you are visa-free, hold an e-VoA, or have a pre-arranged visa
- Join the designated queue.
- Present your passport plus your e-VoA confirmation or visa.
- Be ready to show your return or onward ticket if asked.
- The officer stamps your passport with your entry date and permitted stay.
If you are paying the VoA on arrival
- Go to the “Visa on Arrival” counter, usually before the main immigration desks.
- Pay IDR 500,000 and collect your receipt.
- Take the receipt to the VoA immigration lane.
- Show your passport, receipt and onward ticket. The officer stamps your passport.
Cash works in Indonesian rupiah or major currencies such as USD, EUR and AUD, though change is usually given in IDR. Visa and Mastercard cards are widely accepted.
Autogates
CGK has automated immigration gates, as does Bali’s airport. They are currently aimed mainly at Indonesian citizens and certain foreign nationals, such as frequent travellers or KITAS and KITAP holders. If you qualify, you scan your passport and fingerprint. Most tourists should still plan on the staffed counters.
How long it takes
Expect anywhere from 15 minutes to 60 minutes, sometimes longer at peak periods. Several wide-body flights landing together is what stretches the queue.
Baggage Claim and Customs Lanes
After immigration, check the display screens for your flight number and carousel. Your bag may already be circling by the time you arrive. Before you leave the customs area, an officer will scan the QR code from your e-CD.
- Green Lane: for travellers with nothing to declare beyond duty-free allowances. Show your QR code and walk on.
- Red Lane: for travellers with goods to declare, such as cash above IDR 100,000,000, restricted items or commercial goods. Show your QR code and declare items to the officer.
Allowances, Cash Limits and Prohibited Items
Know these limits before you pack, because the rules apply per person.
- Alcohol: maximum 1 litre per adult.
- Tobacco: 200 cigarettes, 25 cigars, or 100 grams of shredded tobacco per adult.
- Perfume: a reasonable amount for personal use.
- Personal goods: up to USD 500 per person, or USD 1,000 per family. Anything above that is subject to import duty.
- Cash: cash and monetary instruments such as traveller’s cheques above IDR 100,000,000 (or the equivalent) must be declared on the e-CD. Failure to declare can lead to confiscation and penalties.
Prohibited items include drugs, with extremely strict penalties up to the death sentence, plus firearms, explosives, pornography, political literature deemed subversive, and certain electronics such as drones without permits. Leave the drone at home unless you have the paperwork.
Extensions and Overstays
Visa-free entry cannot be extended. If you have a VoA, you can extend once for 30 days. You must start the process at an immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) before your first 30 days end. Expect to submit an application, provide passport photos and attend an interview or biometrics appointment. B211A holders extend at an immigration office as well, with a separate application for each 30-day extension.
Overstaying costs IDR 1,000,000 per day for up to 60 days past expiry. Beyond 60 days, more severe penalties apply, including deportation and a possible travel ban. Put your expiry date in your phone calendar with a reminder at least a week ahead.
Arriving at Other Gateways
Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) in Bali follows nearly the same process as CGK. VoA, e-VoA and e-CD all apply. Bali gets very high tourist volumes, so immigration and customs queues can run longer than in Jakarta, especially in peak season.
If you arrive by sea, several ports in the Riau Islands offer international entry. In Batam these are Sekupang, Batam Centre and Harbour Bay ferry terminals. In Bintan they are Bandar Bentan Telani and Sri Bintan Pura (Tanjung Pinang). Tanjung Balai Karimun and Telaga Punggur also handle arrivals. Visa-free entry, VoA and e-VoA are all available. You show your passport, visa if needed, and e-CD QR code, usually with smaller queues than at an airport.
Getting from CGK Into the City
Once through customs, you enter the arrival hall. Prices below are estimates and can change.
- Airport train (KAI Bandara): runs from CGK (Terminals 1, 2 and 3) to Manggarai Station in Central Jakarta, with stops at BNI City (Sudirman Baru) and Duri. Trains run roughly every 30–60 minutes. The fare is about IDR 70,000 one way to BNI City or Manggarai. Pay with Flazz, e-Money, TapCash or Brizzi cards, or through the KAI Bandara app.
- DAMRI airport bus: serves points such as Gambir, Blok M, Pasar Minggu and Rawamangun. Fares run from IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000 by destination. Pay by cash or card at the counter.
- Official taxis: Blue Bird, Express and other reputable companies wait at designated stands outside arrivals. Look for the official counters. Expect around IDR 200,000 to IDR 300,000 to Central Jakarta, with tolls usually extra.
- Gojek and Grab: book on the app and meet your driver at the designated pick-up points, usually on the upper departure level or in specific parking areas. Fares are similar, around IDR 200,000 to IDR 300,000 to Central Jakarta, plus tolls.
Outside the terminal, the smell of clove cigarettes drifts from drivers waiting at the kerb, and the noise of horns builds as traffic picks up. Stay at your official pick-up point and ignore anyone offering rides without a counter or app.
2026 Budget Reality
Your arrival costs are small and mostly fixed. Here is what to plan for, per person.
- Budget: visa-free entry costs IDR 0. If you need the VoA, it is IDR 500,000. Pair that with a DAMRI bus at IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000. Total: from about IDR 50,000 for visa-free travellers, or IDR 550,000 to IDR 580,000 with VoA.
- Mid-range: VoA at IDR 500,000 plus the airport train at about IDR 70,000, about IDR 570,000 in total.
- Comfortable: VoA at IDR 500,000 plus a taxi or Gojek/Grab at IDR 200,000 to IDR 300,000, plus tolls. That comes to roughly IDR 700,000 to IDR 800,000 before tolls.
- B211A route: an official fee of about USD 100–150 in IDR, plus an agent fee of IDR 2,000,000 to IDR 4,000,000 or more.
- Overstay: IDR 1,000,000 for every day past expiry.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the e-CD. Without the QR code, you will be held up at customs. Fill it in during the 48-hour window before landing.
- Short passport validity. Six months from your entry date is the rule. Check it before you buy your ticket.
- No onward ticket. Officers can ask for it at the counter. Keep a confirmation ready.
- Assuming visa-free can be extended. It cannot. Choose the VoA if you may want more time.
- Applying through look-alike websites. Use molina.imigrasi.go.id and beacukai.go.id/ecd only.
- Forgetting the cash declaration. Anything above IDR 100,000,000, or the equivalent, goes on the e-CD.
- Waiting until the last day to extend. Start at the Kantor Imigrasi well before your 30 days end.

The Visa on Arrival costs IDR 500,000 per person and lasts 30 days. You can extend it once for another 30 days, giving 60 days total. You can pay at the airport in cash or by card, or apply and pay online through molina.imigrasi.go.id before you fly.
Do I need to fill in a customs form for Indonesia?
Yes. The Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) is mandatory for all international arrivals and has replaced paper forms. Complete it at beacukai.go.id/ecd up to 48 hours before landing, then save the QR code. Customs officers scan it before you leave the arrival area.
How long does immigration take at CGK?

Yes, once, for 30 days, for a total of 60 days. You must apply at an immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) before the first 30 days end. Expect to submit an application, passport photos, and attend an interview or biometrics appointment. Visa-free entry cannot be extended.
