Jakarta Public Transport: A Tourist’s Guide to MRT, TransJakarta & More

Jakarta’s traffic is famous for good reason. A 10 km taxi ride can eat an hour or more, and many first-time visitors lose half a day sitting in it. The public transport network is the way around that, but it has its own trap: almost everything is cashless, and there are no single-trip paper tickets on the MRT or KRL. If you arrive at the gate with cash, you are stuck. This guide shows you which system to use, what to buy first, and how much it costs in 2026.

Which Jakarta Transport Fits Which Trip

Jakarta has no single “metro”. It has several systems that overlap, and each one does a different job.

  • MRT: the fast north-south link between South and Central Jakarta.
  • TransJakarta: the widest network, cheapest fares, and 24-hour core corridors.
  • KRL Commuterline: trains to Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi and Rangkasbitung, plus Kota Tua.
  • LRT: two separate systems, useful only for certain areas.
  • Gojek and Grab: door-to-door rides by car or motorcycle.
  • Bajaj and becak: short hops in crowded lanes.

Most visitors will use the MRT and TransJakarta for central sightseeing, KRL for day trips, and an app for the last stretch to a hotel or restaurant.

Get Your Card First: E-Money, KMT and JakLingko

Before you ride anything, buy a stored-value card. The most useful option is a bank-issued e-money card: Flazz BCA, e-Money Mandiri, Brizzi BRI or TapCash BNI. You can buy them at MRT stations, at Indomaret and Alfamart minimarkets, and at bank branches. The card itself costs roughly IDR 20,000–30,000, and that price does not include any balance. Top up at stations, at minimarkets, or through a banking app.

KRL also has its own card, the KMT (Kartu Multi Trip), sold at all KRL stations for IDR 30,000 (card cost only). Bank e-money cards work on KRL too, so you do not strictly need a KMT. One card for everything is the simplest approach.

JakLingko is the integrated payment system that links the MRT, TransJakarta, KRL and LRT. Your existing e-money card generally works across modes, while dedicated JakLingko cards offer broader integration. The rollout is still being refined, so check the benefits at the station counter instead of assuming discounts will apply.

Riding the MRT Step by Step

The Jakarta MRT is clean, air-conditioned and punctual. It currently runs one operational line, the North-South Line from Lebak Bulus Grab to Bundaran HI. Useful stops for visitors include:

  • Bundaran HI: the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout and Grand Indonesia Mall.
  • Dukuh Atas BNI: the major interchange for KRL and LRT Jabodebek.
  • Senayan: Plaza Senayan and Senayan Park.
  • Blok M BCA: Blok M Square and the culinary area.

Trains run from about 05:00 to midnight. At peak times (07:00–09:00 and 17:00–19:00) they come every 5–10 minutes. Off-peak, expect 10–15 minutes.

Fares depend on distance. The minimum is IDR 3,000 and the maximum for the full line is IDR 14,000. Bundaran HI to Senayan costs about IDR 7,000.

  1. Check that your card has enough balance.
  2. Tap the card at the entry gate.
  3. Follow the signs to the right platform and board.
  4. Tap out at your destination gate. The fare is deducted then.

The official MRT-J app supports QR payment through LinkAja, Gopay, OVO and Dana. However, it needs an Indonesian phone number and a registered e-wallet, which is hard for short-stay tourists. A physical card is easier. Official site: jakartamrt.co.id.

Pro Tip: Keep at least IDR 30,000 on your card at all times in 2026. The MRT’s full-line fare is IDR 14,000, and the LRT Jabodebek’s longest trip is around IDR 27,000. A card with too little balance can block you at the exit gate, and the top-up machine may have a queue. Top up at an Indomaret before you start your day, not at the station.

TransJakarta Buses: Flat Fare, 24-Hour Corridors

TransJakarta is Southeast Asia’s longest BRT system, with dedicated bus lanes that skip the car traffic. It has over 200 routes, including 13 main corridors and many feeder routes. Corridors connect areas such as Blok M, Kota, Harmoni, Monas, Senayan and Pulogadung, and the system links up with MRT and KRL stations.

Core corridors run 24 hours. Feeder routes generally run from 05:00 to 22:00. The fare is a flat IDR 3,500 per trip, regardless of distance, and the same price applies at night. Transfers between TransJakarta routes are free within a time limit (around 2–3 hours), as long as you do not exit the system and tap back in at the same station.

Payment is by e-money card only. No cash is accepted on board or at the stop.

  1. Walk up to the elevated stop and tap your card at the gate.
  2. Board the bus. Colours show the service type, for example blue for main corridors and red for express.
  3. Tap out at your destination gate. The flat fare is deducted.

Expect crowds at rush hour. At 08:00 on a weekday, the inside of a bus smells of coffee, cologne and warm rain on office clothes, and you will be standing close to strangers. Travel mid-morning or after 19:30 if you want a seat. Official site: transjakarta.co.id.

KRL Commuterline: Day Trips to Bogor and Kota Tua

KRL Commuterline, run by KAI Commuter, is built for commuters, but it is the best way to reach Bogor and its Botanical Garden, or the Old Town at Kota Tua. Trains run from around 04:00 to midnight, with frequent service at peak times.

Main lines are:

  • Red Line: Bogor/Nambo to Jakarta Kota.
  • Blue Line: Cikarang/Bekasi to Manggarai and Jakarta Kota.
  • Green Line: Rangkasbitung to Tanah Abang.
  • Brown Line: Duri to Tangerang.
  • Pink Line: Kampung Bandan to Nambo via Duri.

The fare is IDR 3,000 for the first 25 km, then IDR 1,000 for every further 10 km. Jakarta Kota to Bogor is about IDR 6,000–7,000. Pay with a KMT or a bank e-money card. Tap in, watch the destination shown on the train and platform, and tap out at your stop. There are no single-trip tickets. Official site: commuterline.id.

The Two LRT Systems (And Which One You May Need)

Jakarta has two LRTs, and they are not fully integrated with each other or with the MRT.

LRT Jakarta

This line runs from Velodrome to Pegangsaan Dua in North Jakarta and mainly serves Kelapa Gading and Pulomas. It is of limited use unless you are staying or visiting there. It runs roughly 06:00 to 22:00, costs a flat IDR 5,000 per trip, and accepts bank e-money cards. Official site: lrtjakarta.co.id.

LRT Jabodebek

Operated by KAI Commuter, this system links Jakarta with Bekasi and Cibubur. Routes run from Dukuh Atas to Harjamukti (Cibubur) and from Dukuh Atas to Jatimulya (Bekasi), with Jakarta stops at Dukuh Atas, Kuningan and Cawang. Dukuh Atas is the interchange for MRT, KRL and TransJakarta. Service runs roughly 05:00 to 23:00.

The fare starts at IDR 5,000 for the first kilometre, then adds IDR 700 per km. The longest trip, Dukuh Atas to Jatimulya, costs about IDR 27,000. Pay with an e-money card or KMT; QR payment via LinkAja, Gopay, OVO and Dana is also possible. Official site: lrtjabodebek.co.id.

Gojek and Grab: When an App Beats the Train

Gojek and Grab fill the gaps that rail and buses leave. Both offer cars (GoCar, GrabCar) and motorcycle taxis, called ojek (GoRide, GrabBike). Download the app, register with your phone number (international numbers usually work), enter your destination, choose the vehicle type, confirm the fare and book. The driver’s name, photo, vehicle and licence plate appear on screen, and you can message them in the app.

Typical 2026 estimates:

  • GoRide / GrabBike: minimum around IDR 8,000–10,000. A 5 km trip costs about IDR 15,000–25,000. This is faster in traffic if you are alone.
  • GoCar / GrabCar: minimum around IDR 15,000–20,000. A 5 km trip costs about IDR 25,000–40,000. This is better for groups, luggage or heavy rain.

Prices rise during peak hours and bad weather. You can pay with cash or a linked credit or debit card. Gopay (Gojek) and OVO (Grab) wallets also work but need local registration.

Bajaj and Becak: Short Rides and Bargaining

These traditional vehicles are more about experience than efficiency. A bajaj is a small motorised three-wheeler, blue on most routes (older models are orange), good for short trips in congested neighbourhoods. A becak is a pedicab with the passenger seat in front, now mostly limited to small lanes and traditional markets because of traffic rules.

Neither has a meter, so agree the price before you get in. Expect roughly IDR 20,000–50,000 for a 2–5 km bajaj ride and IDR 15,000–30,000 for a very short becak trip. Their numbers keep falling in central Jakarta.

What Has Changed Since 2024

  • MRT expansion: The Bundaran HI to Kota extension (Phase 2A) is under construction and expected to be partly operational by late 2026 or early 2027. Check jakartamrt.co.id for the current status before planning around it.
  • LRT Jabodebek: It launched fully in late 2023, so 2026 is its first full period of normal operation. The focus is now on linking it with other modes.

2026 Transport Budget Reality

These are estimated daily figures per person, based on the fares above.

  • Budget (IDR 25,000–50,000 per day): TransJakarta at IDR 3,500 per trip, a few MRT or KRL rides, and maybe one short GoRide. The one-off card cost is IDR 20,000–30,000.
  • Mid-range (IDR 75,000–150,000 per day): MRT and TransJakarta for the main legs, plus two or three GoRide or GoCar trips of about 5 km (IDR 15,000–40,000 each).
  • Comfortable (IDR 150,000–300,000 per day): Mostly GoCar or GrabCar for door-to-door travel, with the MRT used to skip rush-hour jams. Add a bajaj ride (IDR 20,000–50,000) for the novelty.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Arriving with only cash. MRT, TransJakarta and KRL do not take it for fares.
  • Counting on the MRT-J app. Its e-wallet payment needs local registration, so buy a card instead.

  • Tapping out and straight back in at the same TransJakarta station. This can cancel your free-transfer window.
  • Riding at 08:00 or 18:00 with luggage. Peak trains and buses are packed.
  • Taking a bajaj or becak without agreeing the fare. Always negotiate first.
  • Expecting LRT Jakarta to reach tourist areas. It serves North Jakarta residential districts.
  • Assuming the Phase 2A MRT extension is open. It is not guaranteed until the operator confirms.

Onward Travel from Jakarta

When you leave the city, your options widen:

  • Domestic flights: Garuda Indonesia (full service), Citilink (Garuda’s low-cost arm), Lion Air (low cost) and Batik Air (Lion’s full-service arm) fly from Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) and Halim Perdanakusuma (HLP). Book on airline sites or through Traveloka or Tiket.com.
  • KAI intercity trains: They depart from Gambir and Pasar Senen to Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and more. Executive class is recommended for tourists. Book via the KAI Access app or kai.id.
  • PELNI ferries: These are long, multi-day inter-island journeys for travellers with plenty of time. See pelni.co.id.
  • Fast boats: Private operators run Bali (Padang Bai, Sanur) to Lombok (Bangsal, Lembar) and the Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno, Air). Book online, through local agents, or at the harbour, and choose reputable operators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can tourists use Jakarta’s MRT without an Indonesian phone number?

Yes. Buy a bank e-money card such as Flazz BCA or e-Money Mandiri at a station or minimarket and tap it at the gate. The MRT-J app’s QR payment needs a local e-wallet and phone number, but a physical card works with no registration at all.

How much does a ride on the Jakarta MRT cost in 2026?

Fares are distance-based. The minimum is IDR 3,000 and the maximum for the full Lebak Bulus Grab to Bundaran HI line is IDR 14,000. Bundaran HI to Senayan is about IDR 7,000. Fares may change, so confirm at jakartamrt.co.id or at the station.

Does TransJakarta accept cash?

No. TransJakarta is cashless only. You need a bank-issued e-money card, such as Flazz BCA, e-Money Mandiri, Brizzi BRI or TapCash BNI. The fare is a flat IDR 3,500 per trip, including night service after 22:00, and the same card also works on the MRT.

Is Gojek or Grab better for tourists in Jakarta?

Both offer similar car and motorcycle services at similar prices, so use whichever shows the cheaper or faster ride. Both accept cash or a linked card. Their e-wallets, Gopay for Gojek and OVO for Grab, need local registration, so cash or a card is simpler for visitors.

How do I get from Jakarta to Bogor by public transport?

Take the KRL Commuterline Red Line between Jakarta Kota and Bogor. The fare is about IDR 6,000–7,000. Pay with a KMT card (IDR 30,000 card cost, sold at KRL stations) or a bank e-money card, and tap in and out at the gates. Details are at commuterline.id.
