Plenty of blog posts say Indonesia gives “30 days visa-free” to visitors, and many US travellers book flights believing that applies to them. It does not. In 2026, US citizens still need a visa before they pass immigration, and the wrong assumption can mean a stressful scramble at the airport. This guide covers every option, what each costs in IDR, and how the process works at the airport.
Why US Citizens Cannot Enter Visa-Free
Indonesia’s visa-free facility applies only to a specific list of nationalities, and the United States is not on it for tourism or short stays. This has not changed in 2026. If you hold a US passport, you have two main routes: the Visa on Arrival (VoA) for stays up to 60 days, or the B211A social/cultural visa for longer stays.
Visa rules can change, so check the Directorate General of Immigration website (imigrasi.go.id) or your nearest Indonesian Embassy or Consulate before you fly.
Visa on Arrival: Eligibility, Cost, and Entry Points
The VoA is the easiest option for most Americans. It covers tourism, short non-employment business meetings, and social visits. US citizens are eligible.
- Duration: up to 30 days.
- Extension: once, for another 30 days, giving a maximum of 60 days.
- Fee: IDR 500,000, the same at every entry point.
- Passport validity: at least 6 months from your entry date.
On arrival, you can pay in Indonesian Rupiah cash. US dollars are sometimes accepted, but usually at a poor exchange rate. Visa, Mastercard, JCB, and American Express are generally accepted at major airports and seaports.
You can get a VoA at these entry points:
- Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK), Jakarta
- Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), Denpasar, Bali
- Kualanamu International Airport (KNO), Medan
- Juanda International Airport (SUB), Surabaya
- Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG), Makassar
- Hang Nadim International Airport (BTH), Batam
- Sri Bintan Pura Seaport, Bintan
- Benoa Seaport, Bali
Applying for the e-VoA Step by Step
Since 2024, the government has pushed the electronic VoA (e-VoA) heavily. You apply and pay online before you fly, which saves time at the airport. The portal given in our research is molina.imigrasi.go.id. Confirm the address through imigrasi.go.id before you apply, since portal URLs can change.
- Visit the official e-VoA portal.
- Select “Apply Visa” and choose “Visa on Arrival.”
- Upload a scan of your passport biodata page (valid at least 6 months from your entry date) and a recent passport-style photo.
- Fill in your personal details, travel itinerary, and accommodation information.
- Pay IDR 500,000 with a Visa, Mastercard, JCB, or American Express credit or debit card.
- Wait for approval. You will receive an e-VoA confirmation by email, usually as a QR code or PDF. Print it or save it on your phone.
- At your port of entry, go straight to the immigration counter and show your passport and e-VoA. You do not need to visit a separate VoA payment counter.
Extending Your VoA
If you want to stay beyond 30 days (up to 60 in total), you must extend at a local immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) before the first 30 days end. Any immigration office in Indonesia can handle it. The fee is IDR 500,000.
- Prepare: bring your passport with the original VoA sticker, a copy of your passport biodata page, a copy of your VoA sticker, and a completed extension application form. You can get the form at the office or online. Immigration may also ask for a copy of a return ticket dated within the extended 60-day period.
- Visit 1: submit your application and documents. You will receive a payment slip.
- Pay: pay IDR 500,000 at a designated bank or post office, or sometimes at the immigration office cashier.
- Visit 2: return, usually a few days later, for fingerprints and a digital photo.
- Visit 3: come back about 3 to 7 business days after your biometrics to collect your passport with the extended sticker.
You can hire a visa agent to do this for you. Agents typically charge IDR 500,000 to IDR 1,500,000 on top of the official fee. Whether an official online extension system is fully running and widely used in 2026 is worth checking at imigrasi.go.id, because it could save you two of the three trips.
B211A Social/Cultural Visa for Stays Beyond 60 Days
The B211A is the route for US citizens who want to stay longer than the VoA allows, or who visit for social visits, cultural exchanges, family visits, non-employment business meetings, volunteering, or training. It is a single-entry visa and it does not allow you to work in Indonesia.
- Sponsor: required. This can be a person or a company or organisation based in Indonesia, and they must provide a sponsorship letter and supporting documents.
- Initial stay: 60 days.
- Extensions: two, each adding 60 days, for a maximum of 180 days (6 months).
- Fee: IDR 2,000,000 for the single-entry visa.
How to apply
- Find a local sponsor in Indonesia.
- Submit the application online, either through your sponsor or yourself, via the official immigration portal (molina.imigrasi.go.id; confirm the current address on imigrasi.go.id).
- Prepare your documents: a passport biodata scan (valid at least 6 months for the 60-day visa, or 12 months if you plan the full 180 days), a recent passport-style photo, the sponsor letter and sponsor ID (a KTP for individuals, company registration for organisations), proof of funds such as a bank statement showing at least USD 2,000 or equivalent, and a return or onward ticket.
- Wait for approval. The e-visa is emailed to you, and that is what you show on arrival.
Extending a B211A
Each extension costs IDR 2,000,000 and adds 60 days. You will need your passport, the original B211A visa, a sponsor letter for the extension, and an application form. The sponsor or their agent usually files for you, but you must go to the immigration office in person for fingerprints and a photo. Your passport is ready for pickup after several business days. Start early, well before your current visa runs out, so a delay does not push you into overstay.
Arrival Procedures at Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) and Ngurah Rai (DPS)
Both airports follow the same basic order: immigration, baggage, customs, then exit.
Step 1: Immigration
Follow the “Immigration” signs. If you have an e-VoA or B211A e-visa, go straight to the immigration counters with your passport and visa confirmation. If you need a VoA on the spot, go to the “Visa on Arrival” counter first, pay IDR 500,000, and take your sticker to the regular immigration line. An officer will check your documents and take your fingerprints and photo. They may ask why you are visiting and how long you will stay.
Queues vary a lot. At peak hours, expect anywhere from 30 minutes to over 2 hours.
Step 2: Baggage claim
Check the screens for your flight number to find the correct carousel.
Step 3: Customs
Every arriving passenger must complete the Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD). Do it online before you arrive or on the airport Wi-Fi after landing, at ecd.beacukai.go.id (confirm this address before you travel). Declare any dutiable goods, such as items above duty-free limits, certain electronics, or specific medications. You will receive a QR code to show the customs officer, and your luggage may be scanned.
Step 4: Getting out of the airport
At CGK (Jakarta): Drivers will call “taxi, taxi” as soon as you exit, so ignore unofficial offers. Your options are:
- Airport Train (KA Bandara): the Skytrain links Terminals 1, 2, and 3 to the Airport Train Station. From there, trains run to central Jakarta, including BNI City Station and Manggarai Station. Buy tickets in the KAI Access app or at the station.
- Official taxis: Blue Bird and Express from designated stands.
- Gojek and Grab: follow the signs to the designated pickup points, which may be a bit further from the main exit.
At DPS (Bali): Options include:
- Official airport taxis: often with fixed-price counters.
- Gojek and Grab: they operate, but you may need to walk to a designated pickup zone. Prices are generally lower than airport taxis.
There is currently no airport train at DPS. Check the latest status if you are reading this later in 2026.
Entering Indonesia by Sea
US citizens can also arrive by ferry, which is common for travellers coming from Singapore or Malaysia to the Riau Islands. VoA facilities are available at Batam Center, Harbour Bay, Nongsapura, and Telaga Punggur (all Batam), Sri Bintan Pura (Bintan), and Benoa (Bali).
The process mirrors the airport. You go to a VoA counter, pay IDR 500,000, and then go to immigration for your passport stamp. The ECD is also mandatory for boat arrivals, so complete it before you reach the terminal.
2026 Visa Budget Reality
Visa costs are small compared with flights and hotels, but they add up if you extend or use agents. These figures use the official fees and typical agent charges.
- Budget (up to 60 days, do it yourself): e-VoA of IDR 500,000 plus a self-handled extension of IDR 500,000 comes to IDR 1,000,000. Without an extension, it is just IDR 500,000.
- Mid-range (up to 60 days, agent handles the extension): IDR 500,000 for the VoA, IDR 500,000 official extension fee, and IDR 500,000 to IDR 1,500,000 agent fee. The total is roughly IDR 1,500,000 to IDR 2,500,000, and you skip the three trips to the immigration office.
- Comfortable (up to 180 days, B211A): IDR 2,000,000 for the visa plus IDR 2,000,000 for each of two extensions, which totals IDR 6,000,000 in official fees. Any sponsor or agent charges are extra.
Overstay is the expensive mistake. The penalty is IDR 1,000,000 per day. Confirm the current amount with immigration, but plan around it. Ten days over would cost IDR 10,000,000.
What Has Changed Since 2024
- e-VoA is now the standard recommendation. Buying online before you fly has significantly cut queues at arrival halls.
- The ECD has fully replaced paper customs forms. It is a mandatory digital step for all arrivals.
- The B211A online application is more streamlined, which makes it easier for sponsors to file.
- No general digital nomad visa for US citizens. A dedicated, broadly accessible one is not officially in place as a general-purpose visa in 2026. Most remote workers still use the B211A or other specific visa types, so check imigrasi.go.id for any update.
- Second Home Visa: it exists, but it is aimed at high-net-worth individuals and is not a realistic option for typical US visitors.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming visa-free entry. It does not apply to US citizens. Arrange an e-VoA before departure or budget for the VoA counter.
- Short passport validity. Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your entry date. For a full 180-day B211A stay, it needs 12 months.
- Skipping the return ticket. Officers may ask for proof of onward travel. Keep it ready on your phone.
- Forgetting the ECD. It is mandatory for airport and seaport arrivals. Fill it in early so you are not typing on a slow connection beside the baggage carousel.
- Carrying only cards or only dollars. Cards work at major airports and tourist areas, but bring some rupiah for smaller vendors, local markets, and emergencies.
- Waiting too long to extend. Start the extension process well before the expiry date, because it takes three visits for a VoA.
- Working on a B211A or VoA. Neither permits employment.
One small extra: pick up a local SIM from Telkomsel, XL Axiata, or Indosat Ooredoo soon after you land. You will want data for Gojek and Grab, and it also helps if you need to pull up your e-VoA again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do US citizens need a visa to visit Indonesia in 2026?
Yes. US citizens are not eligible for visa-free entry for tourism or short stays. You need a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or a pre-arranged visa. The VoA costs IDR 500,000, allows up to 30 days, and can be extended once for another 30 days.
How much is the Indonesia Visa on Arrival for Americans?
The official fee is IDR 500,000 at every entry point. You can pay cash in rupiah on arrival, or use a Visa, Mastercard, JCB, or American Express card at major airports and seaports. The e-VoA is paid online by card before you travel.
Can I extend my Indonesia VoA to 60 days?
Yes, once. You must apply at a local immigration office before your first 30 days end. The fee is IDR 500,000. Expect three visits: submission, biometrics, and passport pickup. An agent can handle it for an extra IDR 500,000 to IDR 1,500,000.
What visa do I need to stay in Indonesia longer than 60 days?
The B211A social/cultural visa allows an initial 60 days, with two 60-day extensions for a maximum of 180 days. It costs IDR 2,000,000, and each extension costs IDR 2,000,000. You need a local sponsor, and the visa does not allow employment.
What happens if I overstay my Indonesian visa?
Overstaying is a serious offence. The penalty is IDR 1,000,000 per day, and it can lead to deportation and future entry bans. Confirm the current amount with immigration. Start any extension well before your expiry date, or leave before it.
