Who Can Get an Indonesia Visa On Arrival? Check Your Eligibility

You have booked the flight, but one question is still open: do you need to sort out a visa before you land, or can you pay at the airport? Rules change, forum posts go out of date, and a wrong guess can mean long queues or even trouble at the immigration desk. This guide gives you the 2026 picture in plain language, so you can check your eligibility in a few minutes and know exactly what to do next.

Which Indonesia Entry Route Fits You

Indonesia has four main entry options for visitors, and your nationality and trip length decide which one applies:

  • Visa-free entry: up to 30 days, for citizens of specific ASEAN countries.
  • Visa On Arrival (VoA): up to 30 days, extendable once, for citizens of about 97 countries. You can buy it at the airport or apply online beforehand as an e-VoA.
  • B211A social/cultural visa: up to 60 days, extendable to a total of 180 days. You must apply from outside Indonesia.
  • Other visas: for work, retirement, or long-term study, also applied for offshore.

Most tourists from Europe, North America, Australia, and East Asia end up with the VoA. The rest of this guide starts there, after a quick look at the visa-free group.

Visa-Free Entry: Who Qualifies

Visa-free entry is mainly for citizens of ASEAN member countries. As of 2026, the list is:

  • Brunei Darussalam
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam

You can stay up to 30 days, and this stay is non-extendable. If you might need more time, apply for a different visa type before you travel. You also need a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date, a confirmed return or onward ticket, and a tourism purpose. Officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds.

If your passport is not on this list, there is generally no free option for tourism. Non-ASEAN visitors now use the paid VoA scheme. Free entry beyond ASEAN exists only for diplomatic or official purposes.

Who Can Get a Visa On Arrival

As of 2026, citizens of approximately 97 countries are eligible for the VoA. The list has been stable since 2024. Key eligible nationalities include:

  • Australia, Austria, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China
  • Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan
  • Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia
  • South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey
  • United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America

This is not the full list. If your country is not named above, check the official site of the Directorate General of Immigration at www.imigrasi.go.id before you book anything.

The VoA covers tourism, social visits, business meetings that are not employment-related, and transit. It does not cover work. If you plan to be employed in Indonesia, you need a work visa and a KITAS (limited stay permit), which is arranged offshore through the proper channels. Working on a VoA is the quickest way to cause yourself problems.

How to Apply: On Arrival vs e-VoA

You have two ways to get the VoA. Both give you up to 30 days.

Option 1: Buy it at the airport or seaport

  1. After you disembark, follow the signs for “Visa On Arrival” or “VoA Counter.”
  2. Show your passport and pay the IDR 500,000 fee.
  3. Receive a VoA sticker or stamp in your passport.
  4. Go to the Immigration counter, show your passport with the VoA, and get your entry stamp.

Option 2: Apply for the e-VoA online (recommended for 2026)

  1. Go to the official portal: molina.imigrasi.go.id
  2. Register an account with your email address.
  3. Fill in your personal details, travel plans, and passport information.
  4. Upload your documents: a scan of your passport bio-page (valid for at least 6 months), a recent passport-style photo (usually 4×6 cm, white background), and a confirmed return or onward ticket.
  5. Pay IDR 500,000 by credit or debit card.
  6. Wait for approval. It usually takes minutes to a few hours, and the e-VoA arrives by email.
  7. Print a copy and keep it with your passport.
  8. On arrival, go straight to the Immigration counter. Many airports have a dedicated lane for e-VoA holders. Show your passport and printed e-VoA to get your entry stamp.

The e-VoA skips the payment counter completely, which matters when three long-haul flights land at once.

Pro Tip: Airport WiFi can be slow right after landing, so save your e-VoA PDF and your e-Customs QR code to your phone before you leave home, and keep a printed copy of the e-VoA in your passport. Then you can show everything without waiting for a page to load.

Documents and Payment Methods

Whether you buy on arrival or apply online, officers expect the same basics:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.
  • A confirmed return or onward ticket out of Indonesia.
  • Proof of sufficient funds. This may be requested but is rarely checked.
  • Documents and Payment Methods

  • A completed e-Customs Declaration (more on that below).

For payment on arrival, Indonesian Rupiah cash is preferred. Some counters may accept USD, EUR, or AUD, but the exchange rate can be unfavourable. Visa, Mastercard, and JCB cards are widely accepted, and the e-VoA is paid online with the same cards.

Extending Your VoA

The VoA can be extended once, for another 30 days. That gives a maximum stay of 60 days. The timing rule is strict: you must apply at an immigration office in Indonesia before your first 30-day period ends.

  • The extension fee is typically IDR 500,000.
  • Bring your passport, the original VoA, your return ticket, passport photos, and a completed application form.
  • Expect 2 to 3 visits to the immigration office, or hire a visa agent to handle it.

Start the process well before the deadline, not on day 29. Once your 60 days are used, the VoA route is finished.

When VoA Is Not Enough: The B211A Visa

If you want to stay longer than 60 days, the B211A social/cultural visa is the usual answer. It suits extended tourism, visiting family or friends, social activities, non-employment business meetings or market research, and unpaid volunteer work.

  • Initial stay: up to 60 days.
  • Extensions: up to 4 times, 30 days each, for a total of 180 days (6 months).
  • Where to apply: offshore, meaning before you arrive in Indonesia.
  • Who helps: it typically requires an Indonesian sponsor or visa agent. The application goes through evisa.imigrasi.go.id, usually managed by the sponsor.
  • Documents: passport copy, passport photo, bank statements, and a letter from the sponsor.
  • Official fee: around IDR 1,500,000 to IDR 2,000,000 for 60 days. Agent fees vary, so confirm the official figure on imigrasi.go.id.

Arrival Day: CGK, DPS, and the Seaports

The flow is the same for every visa type: leave the aircraft or vessel, buy your VoA if you do not have an e-VoA, clear Immigration, collect your bags, then pass Customs with your e-Customs Declaration.

e-Customs Declaration (ECD)

The ECD is mandatory for all arriving passengers. Fill it in online before you land at ecd.beacukai.go.id. You get a QR code to show at the customs counter. Kiosks at the airport exist for people who skipped it, but they cause delays.

Soekarno-Hatta (CGK), Jakarta

International arrivals are mainly at Terminal 3. Immigration has multiple counters, and waits range from 30 minutes to 2 hours at peak times. e-VoA holders may find faster lanes.

  • Airport Train (Kereta Api Bandara): runs from Terminals 1, 2, and 3 to Sudirman Baru (BNI City) and Manggarai stations. Operated by KAI, about IDR 70,000 to IDR 100,000.
  • Skytrain (Kalayang): free, links all terminals and the Airport Train station.
  • DAMRI airport bus: IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000, to various points in Jakarta and surrounding areas.
  • Taxis: use the designated stands. Blue Bird is a reputable choice.
  • Gojek and Grab: use the designated pick-up points, usually on the upper departure level or in specific zones. Central Jakarta fares are IDR 150,000 to IDR 250,000, depending on traffic and destination.

Ngurah Rai (DPS), Bali

Bali has a separate international terminal. Queues can be heavy in peak season, with waits often 45 minutes to 2 hours.

  • Official airport taxis: fixed prices to popular destinations.
  • Gojek and Grab: available, but with specific pick-up zones that may need a short walk from the main exit. Fares to areas like Seminyak or Kuta are about IDR 100,000 to IDR 200,000. Some parts of Bali have local taxi groups that try to block ride-hailing, and the situation changes often, so check the current pick-up arrangements.
  • There is no train service from DPS.

Seaports

Major seaports that accept international arrivals and the VoA include Batam (Sekupang, HarbourBay, Nongsapura), Bintan (Bandar Bentan Telani, Sri Bintan Pura), and Tanjung Priok in Jakarta. Batam and Bintan are used by travellers coming from Singapore or Malaysia. The steps match the airport: VoA purchase if needed, Immigration, then Customs with your ECD.

What Has Changed Since 2024

  • The e-VoA is now the push. VoA on arrival is still available, but the government strongly promotes the e-VoA to cut queues and processing times.
  • One portal. molina.imigrasi.go.id is now the main official portal for various e-visas, including the e-VoA.
  • Stable VoA country list. The list grew to about 97 nationalities by late 2023 and early 2024, and it is expected to stay stable in 2026.
  • Digital customs is mandatory. The ECD at ecd.beacukai.go.id replaces paper forms and speeds up clearance.
  • Biometric gates are coming, but not here yet. Trials and plans for automated immigration gates exist, but they are not fully available to VoA or visa-free travellers in 2026.

2026 Budget Reality

The VoA fee is IDR 500,000 per person. The government can change it, so confirm on imigrasi.go.id before you fly. Here is what entry costs look like at three comfort levels, counting the visa and the transfer into the city:

  • Budget: e-VoA (IDR 500,000) plus DAMRI bus from CGK (IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000). Total: about IDR 550,000 to IDR 580,000.
  • Mid-range: e-VoA (IDR 500,000) plus the Airport Train (IDR 70,000 to IDR 100,000), or a Gojek or Grab from DPS (IDR 100,000 to IDR 200,000). Total: about IDR 570,000 to IDR 700,000. If you extend your VoA, add IDR 500,000.
  • Comfortable: B211A official fee (IDR 1,500,000 to IDR 2,000,000, plus agent fees) and a Gojek or Grab from CGK to central Jakarta (IDR 150,000 to IDR 250,000). Total: about IDR 1,650,000 to IDR 2,250,000, before agent fees.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Passport with under 6 months left. This is required for visa-free entry and the VoA. Check the date before you buy a ticket.
  • No return or onward ticket. It is a listed requirement. Have a confirmed booking ready.
  • Skipping the e-Customs Declaration. The ECD is mandatory, and the kiosks at the airport slow you down.
  • Waiting until the last day to extend. You must apply before your 30 days end, and the process often takes 2 to 3 visits.
  • Assuming ASEAN visa-free entry can be extended. It cannot. Apply for the right visa before you go if you may stay longer.
  • Using a VoA to work. It covers tourism, social visits, non-employment business meetings, and transit only.
  • Relying only on forum posts. Use the Directorate General of Immigration site, www.imigrasi.go.id, for the final word.
  • Paying with foreign cash at the counter. Some counters take USD, EUR, or AUD, but rates can be poor. Bring rupiah or a card.
