Indonesia eVISA Application Tips: Avoid Common Mistakes

Most eVISA problems in 2026 don’t come from Indonesian immigration being difficult. They come from travellers applying on the wrong website, uploading a blurry passport scan, or realising a week before their flight that their passport expires too soon. A rejected application or a missing confirmation email can cost you days, money, and sometimes your flight. This guide shows you how to apply correctly the first time, which route fits your trip, and what to expect when you land.

Pick the Right Entry Route Before You Apply

Many travellers apply for an eVISA they never needed. Indonesia has three main entry options for tourists, and each suits a different trip.

Visa-Free (VF)

Citizens of certain countries can enter visa-free for 30 days, strictly for tourism, at a cost of IDR 0. This stay cannot be extended. When the 30 days are up, you must leave Indonesia. The list of eligible countries can change, so check the official Indonesian immigration website or your nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate before you book.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)

The VoA is available to citizens of a wide range of countries and costs IDR 500,000. It gives you 30 days and can be extended once for another 30 days, for a maximum of 60 days. It covers tourism, social visits, and limited business purposes such as attending meetings. It does not cover employment.

B211A eVISA

The B211A is the e-Visa for longer tourist or social stays. It gives you 60 days and costs IDR 1,500,000. It can be extended twice, each time for another 60 days, for a total of up to 180 days. Choose it if you plan to stay beyond what the VoA allows, or if you want your visa sorted before you fly.

For a two-week holiday, visa-free entry or a VoA is usually enough. The B211A makes sense for slow travel, long family visits, or trips that combine several islands over a couple of months.

Step-by-Step: Applying on molina.imigrasi.go.id

Since 2024, the official portal for all e-Visa applications is molina.imigrasi.go.id. This includes B211A visas and the pre-payment option for VoA (e-VoA). The portal is run under the Directorate General of Immigration. Here is the process for a B211A:

  1. Create an account. Register on molina.imigrasi.go.id with a valid email address. Use an address you check daily, because your visa will arrive there.
  2. Start the application. Log in, select “Apply Visa”, and choose the correct visa type, for example B211A.
  3. Step-by-Step: Applying on molina.imigrasi.go.id

  4. Fill in the form. Enter your personal details, passport information, and travel plans. Copy every detail straight from your passport.
  5. Upload your documents. The full list is in the next section.
  6. Pay the fee. The portal accepts Visa, Mastercard, and JCB. I couldn’t confirm whether other card types such as American Express or UnionPay are supported, so bring a Visa or Mastercard to be safe.
  7. Submit and wait. Processing usually takes 3-5 working days. Your e-Visa arrives by email. Print it and also save a copy on your phone.

I couldn’t confirm whether an official expedited service exists or what it would cost, so don’t plan around one. Plan around the standard timeline instead.

The Document Checklist That Gets Approved

Immigration officers review your files on a screen, so clarity matters as much as completeness. Prepare these before you open the application form:

  • Passport bio-data page: a clear scan where every line is legible. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. For 180-day visas such as B211B, you need 12 months.
  • Photograph: a recent passport-style photo, usually 4×6 cm, with a white background and a clear face.
  • Onward or return ticket: proof that you will leave Indonesia.
  • Proof of accommodation: a hotel booking or the address of your host.
  • Proof of funds: a bank statement showing at least USD 2,000 (or IDR 32,000,000 equivalent), typically covering the last 3 months.
  • Invitation letter: needed if you are visiting family or friends, or for specific business or social purposes. It is often not strictly required for general tourism on a B211A.

Save documents as PDF and your photo as JPG. Wrong formats are an easy way to stall an application.

Pro Tip: Do your document prep a full month before departure. Scan your passport page and take your white-background photo in good daylight on the first day. Then submit at least 2-3 weeks before you fly. That way, if immigration asks for an extra document, you can reply calmly instead of rebooking flights.

Ten Mistakes That Cause Rejections and Delays

These are the errors that trip up the most applicants. Most of them are avoidable with ten minutes of checking.

  1. Using an unofficial website. Many scam sites copy the look of the official portal. They charge inflated fees or sell invalid visas. Only apply through molina.imigrasi.go.id.

  3. Typing passport details wrong. Check your name, date of birth, passport number, and issue and expiry dates. Even small mismatches can lead to rejection or trouble at the border.
  4. Short passport validity. You need 6 months from your intended entry date for most visas, and 12 months for longer-stay visas like B211B.
  5. Uploading a bad photo. Selfies and heavily filtered pictures get rejected. Use a plain white background and standard dimensions.
  6. No onward ticket. This is mandatory for almost all tourist visas. Airlines may deny boarding if you cannot show proof that you will leave Indonesia.
  7. Weak proof of funds. Submit a clear bank statement showing USD 2,000 or IDR 32,000,000 equivalent.
  8. Applying too late. Processing is usually 3-5 working days, but leave at least 2-3 weeks to cover delays.
  9. Ignoring your spam folder. The confirmation email can land in junk mail. Check it daily after you submit.
  10. Misrepresenting your purpose. You cannot work or earn money on a B211A. Doing so is illegal and can lead to deportation and future entry bans. Paid work requires a proper work permit (KITAS).
  11. Leaving fields or files incomplete. Fill in every requested field and attach every required document in the correct format.

2026 Budget Reality: What Entry Really Costs

The visa fee is only part of your arrival costs. Here is how the tiers compare, including the trip from the airport to the city.

Budget

  • Visa-Free entry: IDR 0 (30 days, no extension).
  • Soekarno-Hatta airport train to central Jakarta: about IDR 70,000 – IDR 100,000.

Mid-range

  • Visa on Arrival: IDR 500,000 (30 days, extendable once for 30 more).
  • Gojek or Grab from Soekarno-Hatta to Central Jakarta: about IDR 200,000 – IDR 300,000, depending on traffic.
  • Official fixed-price taxi from Ngurah Rai to Seminyak: about IDR 200,000 – IDR 250,000.

Comfortable

  • B211A e-Visa: IDR 1,500,000 (60 days, extendable twice for up to 180 days total).
  • Pre-booked hotel or villa transfer: pricing varies by property, so ask when you reserve.

Extensions are handled at a local immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) and carry their own fees, so check the current amount with the office before you go.

Arriving at Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) and Ngurah Rai (DPS)

Before you land, complete the Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) at bc.go.id/cifor. You can also scan the QR codes at the airport on arrival. You receive a QR code when you finish, and customs scans it after baggage claim. The e-CD has been mandatory since 2023 and still applies in 2026.

At immigration

  • Visa-Free: follow the “Visa-Free” or “WNA Bebas Visa” lanes.
  • VoA: if you pre-paid, use the “e-VoA” lane. If not, first pay at the Visa on Arrival counter, then join the VoA immigration lane.
  • eVISA (B211A etc.): use the “e-Visa” or “WNA Visa” lanes.

Officers usually take your fingerprints and a digital photo. Check that your passport is stamped with the right visa type and entry date before you walk away from the desk. At the VoA counter, Indonesian rupiah is preferred. Visa, Mastercard, and JCB cards are widely accepted. Foreign currencies like USD or EUR may be taken, but the exchange rate can be poor, so I’d bring rupiah or a card.

Leaving Soekarno-Hatta

  • Airport train (KAI): connects all terminals to central Jakarta stations (BNI City, Duri, Manggarai). The trip to BNI City takes roughly 50-60 minutes. Buy tickets at the station or on the KAI Access app.
  • DAMRI airport bus: cheaper, with routes across Jakarta and nearby areas, but slower in traffic.
  • Official taxis: Blue Bird and Express Group operate from designated stands. Make sure the meter runs, or agree a fixed price first.
  • Gojek and Grab: use the pick-up points outside the terminals.

Leaving Ngurah Rai

  • Official airport taxis: fixed prices to destinations across Bali.
  • Gojek and Grab: pick-up points are often a short walk from the arrival hall, with prices usually competitive with fixed-price taxis.
  • Hotel and villa transfers: many properties arrange these in advance.

Entering by Boat Through Batam and Bintan

The same rules apply at international seaports. If you travel from Singapore or Malaysia, the key terminals are Sekupang and Batam Centre in Batam, and Bandar Bentan Telani and Sri Bintan Pura in Bintan, all in the Riau Islands.

You go through immigration and customs checkpoints just as you would at an airport. Your passport validity, onward ticket, and visa status must meet the same requirements. The e-CD at bc.go.id/cifor is also mandatory for boat arrivals, so complete it before you board the ferry.

What Has Changed Since 2024

  • e-VoA is now part of the main portal. The separate e-VoA portal was fully consolidated into molina.imigrasi.go.id, so there is one place to apply or pre-pay. A physical VoA sticker or stamp is still issued on arrival.
  • More digital steps. The e-CD is mandatory for all arrivals, by air and by sea.

  • Country lists. I couldn’t confirm any major changes to the Visa-Free or VoA eligibility lists. Check the official immigration website for 2026 updates before you book.
  • Golden Visa. It exists for high-net-worth individuals and investors, but it is not relevant for ordinary tourism or social visits.
  • Digital Nomad Visa (B211C). It has seen discussion and limited rollout, but it is still developing and usually needs sponsorship or specific criteria. I couldn’t confirm its status for general applicants in 2026. For most visitors, the B211A remains the main option for extended stays.

Extensions, Overstays, and When You Need a KITAS

Extensions need to be started early. For a VoA or a B211A, apply at a local immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) before your current stay expires. Visa-free entry cannot be extended at all, so if you want to stay longer than 30 days, choose the VoA or B211A from the start.

Never stay beyond your permitted period. Treat your expiry date as a hard deadline, and book your onward flight to match it. If you want to work, even remotely for an Indonesian client, a tourist or social visa is not the right tool. Paid activity requires the correct permit, such as a KITAS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I apply for an Indonesia eVISA?

Apply only on the official portal, molina.imigrasi.go.id. It handles B211A applications and VoA pre-payment (e-VoA). Many lookalike sites charge higher fees or sell invalid visas, so always check the web address before entering your passport details or card information.

How long does B211A eVISA processing take?

Processing typically takes 3-5 working days, and the visa is sent to your email. Because delays or document requests can happen, apply at least 2-3 weeks before your trip. Check your spam folder too, since the confirmation sometimes lands there.

How much does the B211A cost and how long is it valid?

The 60-day B211A costs IDR 1,500,000. You can extend it twice, each time for another 60 days, for a total stay of up to 180 days. Extensions must be processed at a local immigration office before your current period ends.

What documents do I need for a B211A application?

You need a clear passport bio-page scan (valid at least 6 months from entry), a white-background photo, an onward or return ticket, proof of accommodation, and a bank statement showing at least USD 2,000 or IDR 32,000,000 equivalent. An invitation letter is needed for some visits.

Can I work in Indonesia on a B211A?

No. The B211A does not permit employment or paid activities. It covers tourism, social visits, cultural events, non-employment business meetings, transit, and unpaid volunteering. Working on it is illegal and can lead to deportation and future entry bans. For paid work, you need a proper work permit such as a KITAS.
