Applying for Your Indonesia Visa Online: eVISA vs. VOA Compared

Every year, travellers land in Bali or Jakarta and join a long, slow line at the Visa on Arrival counter. Others hand money to a random website that looks official but isn’t. In 2026 you can skip both problems by applying online through the right portal. This guide compares the e-VOA with the traditional VOA, explains when the B211A e-Visa makes sense, and walks through the airport and seaport steps. Rules can change, so confirm details with the Directorate General of Immigration at imigrasi.go.id before you fly.

Which Entry Option Fits Your Trip

Indonesia has four main ways in. Your nationality, trip length and purpose decide which one you use.

  • Visa-free entry (Bebas Visa Kunjungan): Up to 30 days for tourism, family visits, social activities, art and cultural exchanges, government duties or transit. About 90 countries qualify, including most ASEAN members. Check the current 2026 list on imigrasi.go.id. You apply for nothing and pay nothing. The stay is non-extendable and cannot be converted to another visa type.
  • Visa on Arrival (VOA): For about 92 nationalities, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. You get 30 days, extendable once for another 30 days.
  • e-VOA: The same visa as the VOA, applied for online before you travel.
  • B211A e-Visa: A longer-stay visa for tourism, social visits, non-paid volunteering, non-employment business meetings and MICE events. It is not for employment.

Visa-free, VOA, e-VOA and B211A all need a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. They also need a confirmed return or onward ticket. Officers may ask for proof of funds, though it is unclear how consistently this is checked.

Work is a separate matter. If you plan to be employed in Indonesia, you need a KITAS work permit, not a tourist or social visa.

Applying for the e-VOA Online, Step by Step

The official portal is molina.imigrasi.go.id. Older portals such as visa-online.imigrasi.go.id were phased out or redirected. Use only this address or imigrasi.go.id.

Prepare these before you start:

  • A passport valid for 6+ months
  • A digital passport-style photo, usually 4×6 cm on a white background
  • A scan of your passport bio-page
  • Your return or onward ticket
  • A Visa, Mastercard or JCB card for payment

Then follow these steps:

  1. Go to molina.imigrasi.go.id and register with your email address.
  2. Applying for the e-VOA Online, Step by Step

  3. Log in and choose “Apply for Visa” or the similar option.
  4. Select “e-VOA” as the visa type.
  5. Fill in your personal details, passport information and travel itinerary.
  6. Upload the photo, passport scan and ticket.
  7. Pay IDR 500,000 online.
  8. Wait for approval. The e-VOA is sent to your email, usually within minutes to a few hours.
  9. Print it or save it on your phone, and show it with your passport at the immigration counter.

Apply a few days before departure rather than at the airport gate. Approval is usually quick, but a typo in your passport number is easier to fix at home.

Pro Tip: Save your e-VOA as a PDF on your phone and keep a screenshot too, so you can open it with no signal. Complete the Electronic Customs Declaration at beacukai.go.id/ecd before you land. Keep both QR codes and your passport in one easy-to-reach place so you aren’t searching through emails in the arrival hall.

B211A e-Visa: When You Need a Sponsor

The B211A is the choice if 60 days isn’t enough, or if you want to stay for several months. It is open to all nationalities, but it normally needs an Indonesian sponsor. That can be an individual, a company, or a visa agent acting for you. Most applicants use a reputable agent in Indonesia. A family member or business associate can also sponsor you.

Beyond the usual passport, ticket, digital photo and bio-page scan, you need:

  • A bank statement showing sufficient funds. The draft example is a minimum of USD 2,000 or equivalent over the last 3 months, but the exact 2026 amount and period should be verified.
  • Sponsor documents: KTP (Indonesian ID), NPWP (tax ID), company registration if applicable, and a sponsor letter.

The process works like this:

  1. Choose your sponsor or agent.
  2. Send them digital copies of all documents.
  3. They apply on your behalf at molina.imigrasi.go.id.
  4. The visa fee of IDR 1,500,000 is paid online, by you or by the sponsor.
  5. The approved B211A arrives as a PDF by email, usually within 3 to 10 working days. Some agents offer faster service for an extra fee.
  6. Print it or save it digitally and show it with your passport on arrival.

The B211A gives you 60 days. You can extend it up to 4 times for 30 days each, for a maximum of 180 days (6 months). Digital nomads often use it, but it does not officially allow work for Indonesian entities. A dedicated Digital Nomad Visa was still under discussion and not formally in place as of early 2026.

e-VOA vs. VOA: What Actually Differs

The visa itself is the same. The difference is when and how you get it.

  • Cost: IDR 500,000 for both.
  • Stay: 30 days, extendable once, for 60 days total.
  • Eligible nationalities: The same ~92.
  • Where you apply: The e-VOA is online before arrival. The VOA is at the airport or seaport counter.
  • Payment: The e-VOA needs an online credit or debit card. The VOA accepts IDR cash, often USD, EUR or AUD at the day’s rate, and cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express). IDR is preferred, and cash is a smart backup if the card system fails.
  • Documents: The e-VOA needs a digital photo, passport scan and ticket uploaded in advance. The VOA needs your passport and ticket at the counter.
  • Speed: The e-VOA usually means a faster immigration process and no VOA counter queue.

Compared with the B211A, the e-VOA and VOA start at 30 days instead of 60 and top out at 60 days instead of 180. They cost IDR 500,000 against IDR 1,500,000 and need no sponsor. The B211A is more flexible but involves more paperwork.

Extending Your Stay Without Trouble

Visa-free stays cannot be extended. VOA and e-VOA stays can be extended once for 30 days, and the B211A up to four times. The extension must be filed before your current stay expires, so do not leave it for the last day.

For a VOA or e-VOA extension:

  1. Visit a local Immigration Office (Kantor Imigrasi).
  2. Bring your passport, the original VOA sticker, a copy of your return or onward ticket, a copy of your passport bio-page and a copy of the VOA stamp page.
  3. Bring proof of accommodation. A sponsor letter from your hotel, villa or local host is often requested.
  4. Some offices may require an online application first through their local portal. Ask your office, as this may not be standard everywhere.
  5. Pay IDR 500,000.
  6. Return on a separate visit for the interview and biometrics (fingerprints and photo).

Processing usually takes 3 to 5 working days. B211A extensions follow a similar path and need the sponsor’s help plus biometrics. Each B211A extension costs IDR 500,000, and agents add service fees.

Arriving at Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) and Ngurah Rai (DPS)

The flow is similar at both airports. After you step off the plane, follow the signs to immigration.

  • Visa-free: Go to the “Visa-Free” or “All Passports” lane with your passport and onward ticket.
  • VOA on arrival: Go to the VOA counter first, pay IDR 500,000 and collect your sticker or stamp. Then join the “VOA” or “All Passports” lane.
  • e-VOA or B211A: Go straight to the “e-Visa” or “All Passports” lane with your printed or digital visa.
  • Autogates: Available at CGK Terminal 3 and DPS. They are open to Indonesian citizens and some foreigners with specific e-Visas, including e-VOA. Check 2026 eligibility for your visa type. You scan your passport, then the QR code on your e-Visa if needed, then give fingerprint and face scans.

After immigration, collect your bags. Then show the QR code from your Electronic Customs Declaration at the customs checkpoint. Your luggage may be scanned or inspected. Then you exit to the arrival hall.

Getting Into the City

From CGK, the airport train (Kereta Api Bandara, KAI) runs to central stations like BNI City (Sudirman Baru) and Manggarai in about 50 minutes for IDR 70,000 to IDR 100,000. DAMRI buses cost IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000. Blue Bird and Express taxis operate officially, and Gojek and Grab have designated pick-up points.

At DPS, official airport taxis use fixed zone prices, and metered taxis such as Blue Bird are also available. Gojek and Grab pick-ups are often outside the main arrival hall or on the upper departures level, because of local taxi monopolies. Many hotels and villas offer pre-booked private transfers.

Entering by Boat at Batam, Bintan and Karimun

If you arrive by ferry from Singapore or Malaysia, the same entry options apply: visa-free, VOA, e-VOA and B211A. Ports include Batam (Harbour Bay and Batam Centre), Bintan (Bandar Bentan Telani and Sri Bintan Pura), and Tanjung Balai Karimun. Follow the signs to the immigration counters inside the ferry terminal and present your passport and visa documents. You still need the e-CD customs declaration.

2026 Budget Reality: What Entry Really Costs

The visa fee is just one part of the cost. Here is how it adds up for three kinds of trip.

  • Budget (visa-free): IDR 0 for the visa. Add roughly IDR 50,000 to IDR 80,000 for a DAMRI bus from CGK.
  • Mid-range (e-VOA or VOA): IDR 500,000 for 30 days, or IDR 1,000,000 for 60 days with one extension. Add IDR 70,000 to IDR 100,000 if you take the CGK airport train.

  • Comfortable (B211A through an agent): IDR 1,500,000 for 60 days. Four extensions at IDR 500,000 each add IDR 2,000,000, for a total of IDR 3,500,000 for 180 days. Agent service fees are extra and vary, as do fees for faster processing.

What Has Changed Since 2024

  • e-VOA is now the preferred route. It is fully operational and has cut queues at physical VOA counters.
  • One portal for most applications. molina.imigrasi.go.id covers e-VOA and B211A, so you rely less on third-party agents for basic applications. Agents remain useful for complex B211A cases or sponsorship help.
  • Digital customs is mandatory. The e-CD at beacukai.go.id/ecd replaces paper forms for all arrivals.
  • More autogate access. CGK and DPS have expanded availability to some e-Visa holders. Confirm which types qualify in 2026.
  • Visa-free list. It has stayed largely stable for major tourism markets since 2024, but check for minor changes.
  • Health rules. As of early 2026, there are no COVID-19 vaccination or testing requirements for entry. Check current regulations before travel.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using an unofficial website. Many sites copy the official look. Use only molina.imigrasi.go.id or imigrasi.go.id.
  • Assuming visa-free can be extended. It cannot. If there is any chance you will stay longer than 30 days, choose a VOA, e-VOA or B211A.
  • Forgetting the onward ticket. It is required for every visa type and for visa-free entry.
  • Passport validity under 6 months. Count from your entry date, not your departure date.
  • Waiting too long to extend. File before your current stay expires, and allow for a second visit for biometrics plus 3 to 5 working days of processing.
  • Skipping the e-CD. Complete it at beacukai.go.id/ecd, then keep the QR code accessible.
  • Relying only on a card at the VOA counter. Carry IDR cash as a backup in case of system issues.
  • Treating the B211A as a work visa. It does not allow employment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the e-VOA cheaper than the Visa on Arrival?

No. Both cost IDR 500,000 and give 30 days, extendable once for another 30 days. The difference is convenience. You apply at molina.imigrasi.go.id before flying, pay by card, and usually avoid the queue at the VOA counter when you land.

Can I extend a visa-free stay in Indonesia?

No. Visa-free entry allows up to 30 days, and that stay is non-extendable and cannot be converted to another visa type. If you might want longer, pick a VOA, e-VOA or B211A before you travel, because you cannot change it once you are inside.

How long can I stay on a B211A e-Visa?

The B211A gives 60 days for IDR 1,500,000. You can extend it up to 4 times for 30 days each at IDR 500,000 per extension, reaching a maximum of 180 days. It usually requires an Indonesian sponsor, often a visa agent who charges extra fees.

What should I do if my visa is about to expire?

Go to a local Immigration Office (Kantor Imigrasi) before it expires, because extensions must be filed in advance. Expect an interview, biometrics on a separate visit, and about 3 to 5 working days. For overstay penalties, check imigrasi.go.id for the current rules.

Do I need to fill out a customs form when I arrive?

Yes. The Electronic Customs Declaration at beacukai.go.id/ecd is mandatory for all arrivals and has replaced paper forms. You complete it online before or on arrival, receive a QR code, and show that QR code with your passport at the customs checkpoint.
